Jodi Dean : “Why the net is not a public sphere.” Constellations 10.1 (2003): 95-112.

  • In this paper, Dean argues that with the upcome of the Web, democratic practices and modes of affiliation have to be considered uncoupled from a notion of the public sphere and understood within a different political architecture. She constitutes these considerations with pointing to the changes in how communication is organized: while the idea of the public sphere is based on ,democratic values‘, the Web rather seems to be based on capitalistic values. Dean therefore offers the sketch of ,neodemocratic issue networks‘ as a potential concept to reconsider this new ideology (which might also lead to a shift in society).
